Apply To Nursing Schools
Alaska Nursing Prerequisites
The board of nursing in Alaska manages the requirements for current nurses that are seeking positions in the hospitals and clinics in Alaska, as registered nurses. The board oversees the application and reinstatement of nurses to ensure that all nurses are licensed before they are able to practise in Alaska.
Prior to become licensed, the nurse must have completed a nursing program through one of the educational facilities in the US or in Canada. Programs are available for Licensed Practical Nurses through colleges and technical schools and for registered nurses through colleges and universities. These programs can enable the student to learn the required information in the nursing program, and can ensure that the student is prepared.
There are bridging programs that are available through Alaska technical schools and colleges. These bridging programs can allow the nursing student to study to become and LPN and use part-time courses to take the certifications that are required to become and RN, while working.
Registering in these programs simply requires the student to have completed their secondary education and partake in the required programs that will help to create the base of information that is going to be built upon in the nursing program. In addition, anatomy and physiology are required to learn about the body and the bodily systems, to increase the information base.
In addition to the education required to become a nurse in Alaska, the student must also take part in practical learning experiences, where they are to spend time in hospitals and clinics taking part in the on-the-job training that will teach the skills that had been taught as theory as part of the educational classes. The practical experience is completed over the course of the education term and is one of the prerequisites to allow for the student to graduate from the nursing program.
Nurses that have studied in a foreign country, other than Canada, are required to formally certify by the board to ensure that the information learned is suitable to the demands of the current nursing positions in Alaska. This is achieved through simple testing to ensure that the Alaska nursing prerequisites are met from the foreign education that had been chosen.
