California Nursing Prerequisites

Are you a student trying to choose a career that is going to allow you to work with patients, a career that is going to allow you to problem solve and work as part of a team? Nursing is a great career option for students seeking a challenging and rewarding experience. When considering a nursing career, students should consider the prerequisites that are required for the position, specific to their state.

The first prerequisite that must be met in California is to begin the educational program to become trained as a nurse, and to decide which type of nursing that is going to be studied. Students seeking to be trained as practical nurses can take advantage of online programming, allowing the student to complete modules and online courses prior to the clinical, where the student must put the skills and theory that have been learned to the test.

Registered nursing programs and Nurse practitioner programs require more in depth course programs and therefore require the student to complete the education through the traditional classroom environment. Once the education has been completed, both types of nursing will require the student to obtain a clinical or practicum, where the student has the opportunity to work one on one with patients, to put the skills that have been learned to the test.

Once the education and practical work has been completed, the student is eligible to graduate from the programs as a nurse, but the student is not yet eligible to practise nursing in a hospital or clinical care environment. Before the student is eligible to become a practising nurse, as part of a position, they must complete the process of becoming licensed with the California state board of Nurses.

The process of becoming licensed with the California state board of Nurses is the last California nursing perquisite that must be obtained. The student is required to take an exam that will detail all of the information that has been learned through their education and clinical and work experience with patients in the form of an exam. In order for the student to become a licensed and registered nurse, the student must pass the exam given – completing the process of becoming a registered nurse.
