Maine Nursing Prerequisites

A nursing career can be a rewarding choice for Maine students. There are many choices available when choosing between nursing schools, including the University of Maine and technical schools, even online courses, to allow students to choose a career in nursing with ease. Students should be informed about the Maine nursing prerequisites through each of these programs, and methods of delivery, to ensure that they are prepared for the work that is required of the student.

Maine nursing prerequisites include that the student prove their eligibility for the program in order to gain acceptance into the nursing school. Students must demonstrate satisfactory performance in subjects like science, math and English before they are accepted into the program. Students that have lower or unsatisfactory grades in these courses through their secondary education may require upgrading, which can be completed online, through distance education or through evening and weekend courses. Many nursing schools in the state will allow the student to complete the upgrading of the courses as one of the stipulations for admission into the nursing program, allowing the student to apply for the nursing program without a delay required to upgrade the education.

Depending on the program that is chosen, there are different nursing prerequisites. Registered nursing programs are more intensive than nursing assistant programs and therefore require the student to have a more in depth understanding of the theory, sometimes requiring the student to complete an anatomy and physiology course prior to the beginning of the program. Students can determine these specific prerequisites by visiting the application page of the nursing program, at the school website, or by contacting a member of the admissions department in the nursing school.

Once the nursing program has been completed, the student is eligible to complete the licensing exam through the Maine state board of Nurses. This licensing exam allows the student to practise nursing in the state, once it has been passed and is the final prerequisite for the nursing student before their career begins.
