New York Nursing Prerequisites
There are many University and college programs for future nurses to choose between when considering beginning the nursing career in New York. These programs each have different New York nursing prerequisites and require the student to have studied different types of courses and levels of subject in the past, depending on the type of nursing program that is being entered. Students can use the program guides and information for these schools and programs when planning their education and the career to come.
What are some of the common New York nursing prerequisites that are seen for students with the goal of becoming a registered nurse? Students that are in the midst of applying for a registered nursing program have two choices; the student can complete the nursing program through a college or university offering the program without any breaks in the certification, full time.
Alternatively, the student can choose to bridge the program, going through three different levels of nursing, beginning with a nursing assistant, moving on to becoming a practical nurse and finally bridging the final portion of the program with the completion of the registered nursing program and degree. Students can choose to complete the entire program, or maintain their employment with part time studies through the course of the three different programs. Depending on the student’s schedule, career goals, financial situation and the length of time that the student would like to study, they can choose between these delivery methods.
The prerequisites that are required for these programs include the regular secondary school courses. Science, math and English courses are required for the student to build the foundation for the nursing education, helping the student to understand the information that is going to be presented throughout the nursing career. New York nursing prerequisites require that the student complete secondary school, or the equivalent for mature students, before being accepted into the nursing school program.
Once the education has been completed, the work is not over yet. Students must complete a licensing exam provided by the New York state board of Nurses to ensure the student has a grasp on the information required to become a nurse and the ethics and issues that surround the career choice.
